Is Food Important?
Is it really better to consume local food than imported food? Comparing 5 foods, 4 countries, and exploring from an environmental perspective.
My Role
Data visualization, Graphic design, Analysis of China's data
Tool
Excel, Adobe Illustrator
Challenge
Original idea: we wanted to calculate the proportion of domestic and imported food consumption and derive consumption preferences.
Challenge: Lack of data on imports that are then processed for export.
Solution: compare domestic production and imports instead.
Sketch
To visualize data in a clearer way, we tried different forms

Line Chart
Suitable for single data; boring form

20 Grids
Not convenient to make comparisons (between catagories, between countries)
Round Wave Chart
Hard to tell the changes in years; The overlay of colors creates confusion
Findings
There has been no significant increase in the domestic production of various foods in each country, while at the same time China's demand for imported bovine product has been growing steadily year after year.
The number of food miles and CO2 emissions of most foods are not exactly proportional as one might think.

Good Practice
5 qualities of great visualizations
Truthful, Functional, Beautiful, Insightful, Enlightening
Topic that arouse curiosity
People are always passionate about food
Interesting and unique visualization format

The Truthful Art, Alberto Cairo
Alberto describes 5 essential qualities that should be seen in data visualization projects,
To Be Improved
Interactive data visualization
Explore possible reasons for the turning point and call out
Add clear reading guides in a visual way
Clarify the meaning of rising and falling curves in positive and negative space;
Clearly state that the lighter color bars represent food miles and the darker color bars represent CO2 emissions
